Question on using the VMWare backup software - where exactly do i install the Virtual Machine edition software? Should this be a standalone machine, or a machine that is a VM on one of our ESX hosts?

(We have 4 vSphere (ESXi) hosts spread across three geographically distant data centers and 1 vCenter appliance)

I wasnt sure if the machine running the backup software should be completely external from the vSphere environment... and if so, does all the backup traffic run through that separate host? (which would dictate where precisely I should place the backup machine)

Apologies for the slow reply. You can install the VM Edition on any Windows OS - either a hosted VM on any host or on a physical server with access to ESX. The traffic will flow through this agent so keep this in mind when selecting the best location for the install (best speed to / from the ESX host and sufficient CPU for processing of the VM images).
