The files that are located in the dfmap directory (/opt/local/Online Backup/etc/config/dfmap) are taking up 1.4 Gigs of space on our root drive. There are about 5,000 files all ranging from a few kilobytes to just under a megabyte with a few that are about 1.5-2.5Mb. What are these files and how can I reduce the amount of files being created in this directory by the backup software?

That folder is used for calculating differential maps during block-level uploads. The size depends on the number of files you're backing up. Currently there is no way to reduce its size, you need to have enough space to accommodate this data and perform successful backups on Linux/Mac.
