Best Practices for Efficient Backup Management

Hey There,

I’m seeking advice on how to optimize backup management for my organization. Here are some key areas where we’d love your insights:

] Storage Solutions: How do you find the perfect balance between on-site storage and off-site/cloud options? Reliability and cost-effectiveness are both high priorities.

[] Backup Testing: What are your strategies for making sure backups aren’t just happening, but they’re also actually recoverable in a worst-case scenario?

] Data Deduplication: Anyone have experience using data deduplication to save storage space? Tips or tricks welcome!

We’re all ears for any recommendations or personal experiences you have. I already searched on internet and read this: [URL deleted] but I want more tips and advice. Looking forward to learning from your expertise and shoring up our organization’s backup strategy!

Thanks

Scheduling Backups: For most computers I see daily incremental backups and weekly full backups as being appropriate. For file servers, an hourly backup of the critical files during the workday. If the workday is 8 to 5, could backup hourly from 9 to 6. The daily incremental backups can be done during hours that the computer or server is not as busy. Also, the weekly full backup can be scheduled during the weekend to avoid causing slowdowns.

Storage Solutions: This depends a lot on your needs. The perfect world on backup storage may be too expensive. The least expensive storage usage may not provide enough protection.

Backup Testing: We try to do periodic file and folder restores unless we get enough requests from users in normal day to day operations. We also like to test a bare metal recovery of image backups to verify that our instructions are up to date and that we get the results we hope for.

Data Duplication: We normally use data deduplication, especially for cloud storage, as it saves money by reducing storage requirements.
