I know of a number of different very useful restore options via MSP360. There are times that something goes wrong with a Windows computer that would make restoring it to a prior date/time ideal, especially if we could do this without having to travel to the computer. Is there any way to do a Bare Metal type restore, without having to use a bare metal restore drive with local access to the computer? It would be ideal if there was a way to restore to a prior date/time like what can be accomplished via Windows System Restore.
Would it be possible to do a restore, similar to the criteria above, if this involved a Windows Server running on a Hyper-V Server host? Could you restore to an alternate VM remotely via MSP360, turn Off the old damaged VM, then start and configure the new replacement VM?
Hey @TimeTraveler,
The new Restore Wizard is expected to include a “restore to a different computer” option in one of the upcoming updates
For now, here’s what you can do:
- Prepare for full system restore
- Create a bootable USB drive or ISO file using MSP360
- Get access to the new machine (bare metal)
- Physical machine: You’ll need physical access at least once to boot it from the MSP360 bootable USB. After that, the machine will show up in the Management Console, and you can connect to it (via MSP360 Connect) and continue the restore remotely.
- Hyper-V VM: If you have access to the host, just create a new VM and mount the ISO you created earlier. This guide walks through it: https://help.mspbackups.com/restore/bare-metal/recovery
- Run the restore
- Once you’re in the recovery environment, just create and run a restore plan on the target machine.
There’s also a workflow for restoring to a different computer, but this should get much easier once the updated Restore Wizard is released.
Thanks. This is helpful. I look forward to the added ability in the future to restore to a different machine, potentially without having to go on site.
