Newbie question: how do I connect to a remote computer?

Hi!
I want to connect to a remote computer.
I select Control Remote Computer.
In the Control Remote Computer pane, I see “Connect to”.
I assumed that I need to enter an IP address there.
Not possible; field too short.

So - how do I connect to a remote computer, knowing only its public IP address, please?
If I know a remote computer’s host name, can I make that work? (Field too short)
Example: “customer.softwarecenter.us:3390”

I would be very grateful for tips on the basic steps I haven’t been able to find out!

Thank you! Now I understand! Shame: I won’t be able to use CloudBerry Remote Assistant in that case - but it narrows down the possibilities I need to investigate!
