I'm finding remoting into a 1080p monitor is fine (from a 1440p monitor) but when I try to access a Surface Pro machine, (2736x1824), performance is really slow. Any ways to mitigate that?

The biggest problem though is the mouse alignment. I've only really experimented with it in scaled mode but I'm clicking on one part of the screen and the click registers somewhere else. One other potential contributing factor is that the person I'm connecting to is registered blind so has the UI pumped up to 250%.
