I am using a Windows server to back up files that are stored in a NAS box.

    I have "Force VSS" unchecked.
I have checked the "Do not backup files in use.." option.

When the backup runs, I get an error saying, "Files and folders were skipped ... (Code: 1603)"

How can I stop it from trying to back up these files? After the failure, the scheduled backup stops, and I have to restart it every four hours.

Is this really an error? AFAIK it's an info message reporting how many files were skipped based on your settings

I agree that this is more of a warning, but it stops the backup from running on the next scheduled time. Meaning I have to log in every 4 hours to restart the backup.

It shouldn't. Even errors and failed backups do not cancel the schedule. Can you post screenshots of the schedule step and the actual schedule settings for this plan?
