  • valid file names
Thanks, Caleb, I'll let her know. My guess is that the documents started with copy/paste from web pages, and then Pages suggested the title based on the start of the document. Just my guess though.

    done, ticket #87946.
  • valid file names
Trying to get them. She says CSV Export is not available in the Mac version. How can she copy/paste the file names (or complete error log) to send to me?

She also says a couple of files today get the message "File contain illegal symbol!" but she doesn't see any reason. So perhaps it's a misleading message. (Since she had to retype the message, I can't swear there's no typo in it.)

This backup is to Amazon S3. Is there a restriction on S3? I have not tried to look at the object names created by CBB, but AIUI there is no restriction on characters in object names.

    Thanks,

  • copying history
Thanks, and thanks for the tip. I've excluded the Firefox browser-extension-data folder; that'll stop the errors I was looking at.

Weird errors. They all relate to Adblock Plus. The Adblock folder itself gets "an item with the same key has already been added". The storage.js file within that folder gets "Valu cannot be null", Neither explains anythning to me. Luckily I have no need to back up this folder.

  • edit w/o wizard?
Cool. Thanks. As I say, I like it.

I'd like to see parity in the Mac version, simply because I support three family members, all remote, and one of them uses a Mac. Can't predict any revenue potential as long as there's a freeware version though ...

Did the trial a couple of months ago. Thanks.
  • what's "user name" in backup notifications?
    Hi Caleb,

Oh, I see it's put in the "Dear" line in the email report. I left it blank using the Windows version, and the email says "Dear customer". My sister, forced to enter something in the Mac version, entered "backups" and the email says "Dear backups".

I'd suggest that this be explained, either in the documentation or in a hint on the config screen. i'd go with the latter, since it only needs a few words. ("User name" usually implies a logon ID, so that's confusing.)

    Thanks,

    Edward
  • manually modifying backup config?
Ah, thanks. I had looked in ProgramData but I guess I was fooled by the GUID (or GUID-like) file names. Worked like a charm.

Switching regular<->hybrid would be good. What I'd really like (as we discussed in another thread) is a hybrid backup which would update the local backup on schedule even while the cloud backup was still incomplete. Dreams. ;-)

  • files sometimes back up, sometimes fail
Oh, I guess I was confused by the word "force" -- I was assuming that with the option reset, VSS would be used when needed, but with the option set, always. Is there a reason the option isn't just called "Use VSS"?

    Thanks,

    Edward
  • files sometimes back up, sometimes fail
Oh, I'm sure they were in use. Many of them are Firefox and Chrome files in the AppData folder -- SQLite files. The question is not why they failed on backup #2, but why they did NOT fail on backups #1 and #3 (and as of today #4). Or IOW why the discrepancy in behavior under what appears to me to be the same conditions.

Thanks for the advice on VSS; I'll do that. It was not clear to me from the docs whether this is an expensive option; I gather you are saying it's not.

    Thanks,

    Edward
  • scheduling, long and short
Thanks, Caleb ... OK, my two backups are the same data, so the simple way would be to set up two backups, and perhaps schedule the local backup to run 2 hours/day and the cloud backup the other 22 hours/day.

Or perhaps -- if I can make space locally, and I think I can -- start by creating and completing a local backup. Then change it to run 2 hours/day, and set up a hybrid backup to run the other 22 hours/day. When the hybrid completes (in a few weeks), delete the local-only backup.

I'm actually setting this up for several family members as well as for myself. I'm probably the only one with enough data to justify this complication.

  • Amazon Drive credentials?
Thanks. Obviously there's some trust, or we would not be sharing space. I won't be able to do the actual setup in all cases, but if it's only needed once, that might be OK.

or the credentials specific to DriveDavid Gugick

That gets back to my question. What exactly are "credentials specific to Drive"?
